Is it worth to become an Owner-Operator?

Absolutely. Keep in mind that being an Owner Operator is more of a lifestyle choice than just a job. Simply purchasing a truck doesn’t ensure success. Success in any business requires dedication and hard work. Just as buying a guitar doesn’t automatically make someone a legendary guitarist like Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton, becoming an Owner Operator requires significant effort, skill, and a touch of luck. With perseverance and determination, achieving your goals is definitely within reach. Good luck!

What’s the minimum rate per mile an Owner-Operator should accept?

There isn’t a fixed minimum rate per mile, as it varies based on several factors. Ideally, you should aim to maximize both the number of miles you drive and the rate you earn per mile on a weekly basis. If you set your expectations too high—like insisting on $99.99 per mile—you might find it challenging to secure loads and could risk financial trouble. It’s important to be practical and realistic about your rates. Use your judgment, and consult with your dispatcher, who is there to support your success.

What does "non-forced dispatch" or "be your own boss" mean?

Non-forced dispatch means that as an Owner-Operator, you have the autonomy to choose your operating area, schedule your home time, and adhere to legal limits. It’s crucial to only accept loads that you can deliver legally and safely. While regulations set minimum standards, you’re responsible for maintaining high safety standards and making decisions that prioritize your well-being. This means you should never be pressured to drive if you’re sick, fatigued, out of hours, or facing unsafe conditions. Additionally, you have the freedom to avoid overweight or unsafe loads and to determine when to pull over due to weather or other factors. Ultimately, you have control over when to come home and when to accept or decline loads.

Can I cancel a load once I’ve agreed to it?

No, once you’ve committed to a load, cancellation is not an option. While we offer non-forced dispatch, it’s important to use this flexibility responsibly. Canceling loads can damage the carrier’s reputation, leading to fewer customers and reduced pay for everyone involved. It’s crucial to honor your commitments to maintain a strong professional standing and ensure smooth operations.

How much money can I make with 917 Smith?

Your earning potential with 917 Smith is largely up to you.  Some of our Owner-Operators have successfully earned up to $5,000 per week in take-home pay under our dispatch. Your income will depend on various factors, including the loads you choose and how effectively you manage your operations.

How quickly does 917 Smith pay Owner-Operators?

We pay every Friday. Any loads delivered by Wednesday will be included in that week’s paycheck.

What is Government Contracting?

After six months with us, you may become eligible to run government dedicated lanes. While these lanes happens to pay less than on-demand loads and more complicated, they offer greater predictability and make your work easier. If you’re interested in government contracting, let your manager know. They can watch for opportunities that match your preferences and keep you informed when suitable options become available.

How long it takes to lease on to a company?

The whole process might take up to 10 business days.

What types of trailers are available for Owner-Operators?

At 917 Smith, we own four carrier companies, each specializing in different types of trailers:

  • Two companies operate exclusively with Dry Van trailers.
  • One company uses only Reefer trailers.
  • One company offers Open Decks, including Lowboy  and Flatbed trailers with Overdimensional Capabilities.

You can select the type of trailer that best suits your needs and preferences.

What ELD does 917 Smith offer for Owner-Operators?

We provide Motive (formerly KeepTruckin) ELDs for our Owner-Operators. We chose Motive because it offers a fair price, easy installation, and full compliance, making the transition smooth for our drivers. You can start by using the free KeepTruckin app on your phone. When you’re ready, or when the time comes, the ELD device will connect to your truck, and the app on your phone will pair with the ELD via Bluetooth. Additionally, this system offers seamless integration with weigh station bypassing and tolling systems.

Will the company fix my truck if it breaks down?

As an Owner-Operator and business owner, you are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of your truck. It is crucial to keep your vehicle in optimal condition and plan for any potential repairs. However, your dedicated manager is available to support you, helping to streamline the process and assist with anything from routine maintenance to emergency towing if needed.

What does the onboarding process look like?

After successfully completing the basic safety questionnaire, our Safety Department will reach out to you to gather the necessary documentation and address any additional inquiries required to move forward. Once the Safety Compliance Department has completed the background checks, you will be issued a contract that includes the name of the company you have been assigned to. You will have the opportunity to review the contract and ask any questions you may have. Upon signing, our teams will coordinate to ensure you are prepared to start as soon as possible. This includes arranging drug and alcohol tests, signage, DOT inspection, ELD setup, toll transponder, IRP registration, and other required steps.

What is the minimal contract duration?

The minimum contract duration is one month. However, we offer flexibility, allowing you to exit the contract at any time, even within the first two weeks, if you choose.
